In Hundshaupten, a district of Egloffstein in the Forchheim district, stands a four-winged castle complex. Situated on a mountain spur of the Jurassic plateau, it offers a view in Franconian Switzerland.

History+

The first documented mention of Hundshaupten Castle occurred in 1369, when it was owned by the Lords of Wiesenthau. The complex suffered multiple destructions: in 1388 during the City War by Nuremberg troops, in 1412 by Burgrave Friedrich VI of Nuremberg, and in 1525 during the Peasants' War. After these events, the castle was rebuilt in 1561. When the Wiesenthau line in Hundshaupten died out in 1613, the fief reverted to Michelsberg Monastery in Bamberg. In 1661, after the Thirty Years' War, the monastery sold the castle to Hieronymus Christoph Freiherr von Pölnitz, the city commander of Forchheim.
