Museum

Hunyadi Castle in Timișoara is the oldest historical building in the western Romanian city and impresses with its architecture, which combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. It is a testament to the region's eventful history and today an important cultural center.

History+

The castle was originally built between 1307 and 1315 as a residence for the Hungarian King Charles I, who ruled from here for almost eight years. After an earthquake between 1442 and 1447, the statesman John Hunyadi commissioned an extensive expansion and fortification by the Italian architect Paolo Santini de Duccio. During the Ottoman rule from 1552 to 1716, the castle served as the Pasha's seat, with the walls being repaired and the defenses modernized. It suffered damage during the siege by Prince Eugene of Savoy in 1716 but was subsequently rebuilt. Further destruction occurred during the Revolution of 1848 by the Hungarian army, after which the castle was rebuilt in its current form in 1856. Until the end of World War II, it was used militarily as a barracks and warehouse.
