Iberg Castle

The origins of Iberghof lie in the 13th century, when it served as the manor of the Lords of Iberg, who were ministeriales of the Counts of Kyburg. In the early 14th century, the property came into the possession of the Segesser family from Mellingen. From 1591, it changed hands several times, belonging to various members of the Order of St. John and the Teutonic Order. In 1731, Jost Ranutius II. Segesser von Brunegg repurchased the family estate. Until the 18th century, Iberghof was a part of the southern city fortifications. Despite their independence from the urban legal system, the owners were obliged to contribute to the city's defense. In 1779, Iberghof was sold to the city and initially served as a rectory, later from 1856 as a hospital, poorhouse, and retirement home. The building acquired its current late Gothic appearance between 1570 and 1580. After renovation in 1968/69, a daycare center was established there.
