Igling Castle

The origins of Igling Castle date back to 1215, when a castle was built on the hill above Igling after an earlier fortification on the Stoffersberg had been destroyed. Around 1339, the complex fell to the Bavarian dukes through the Conradine donation, who leased it to finance their wars and livelihood. The castle changed hands several times, including Karl Gelnhofer, Schwikker von Gundelfingen, the Meitinger, Langmantel, and the Augsburg patrician family Rehlinger. In 1611, the Bavarian Elector Maximilian transferred the castle to Joachim Freiherr von Donnersberg, who had it rebuilt in 1620; of this construction, only the castle chapel remains today. After being plundered by Swedish troops in 1632 and the extinction of the Donnersberg family, the castle was sold to Count Spaur, who had it rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style.
