In the 14th Century the property belonged to the lords of IJse. These were vassals of the Duke of Brabant. The last heir, Maria d'Oisy, sold the property in 1335 to John I Wittems.

From 1410 - 1456 Henry II of Wittems, married to Jacoba van glymes, lived here. His son, Henry III of Wittems (1440-1515) (also Van Beersel Wittem or van Witthem Beersel) built the castle in 1489. He married Elisabeth van der Sprout. Hereafter owners of the castle were Philip Wittem Beersel (1471-1523), Henry IV of Wittems (1495 - 1554), Georges Wittem (1500 - 1544), Anton of Wittems (1530 -.
