Illerfeld Castle

Illerfeld Castle is a castle built by Sigmund von Lupin in Illerfeld, a hamlet of the municipality of Ferthofen, which is a district of Memmingen in Upper Swabia. Built in 1784, the complex is located not far from the banks of the Iller on a slight hill along State Road 2009.

The two-story central building of the castle has a hip roof and – with the exception of round windows in the outer wing axes – rectangular windows. The existing main building of Illerfeld was extended between 1820 and 1830 by the outer axes of the single-story side wings. In the ceiling of the

southwest room on the ground floor, there are embedded remains of an organ wing from St. Martin in Memmingen. Further fragments of these wings are embedded in the ceiling of the stairwell and in the upper hallway. The stairwell features an oak railing with Empire motifs. The so-called hall and the two adjoining rooms on the upper floor are equipped with two-story stoves. The lower parts of the wood-burning fireplaces are made of cast iron. The upper parts have a terracotta vase crowning.

Farm Buildings and Park

The two-story farm building is located north of the residential building and has a hip roof. Immediately next to it is a slightly smaller building, the so-called barn. It also has a hip roof with dormer windows. At the garden gate, two sandstone tablets with coats of arms and inscriptions are attached to the front sides of the pillars. Through the garden gate, one enters the outer park, which is now separated from the inner park by State Road St 2009. Approximately 250 m south of the castle, there is a sculpture of M. Antonius Antius Lupus. It is a replica of the alleged ancestor of the Lupin family. The original is located on the Via Appia in Rome. On the hill 800 m south of the castle, the lord of the castle had an obelisk placed in memory of a beloved riding horse. Between the two monuments, there is a tulip tree avenue and a small park.
