Imbshausen Castle

The place name Imbshausen was derived from Count Immad, who bequeathed all his possessions to Corvey Monastery from 826 to 853. Immadehusen, Immedeshusen, Hymmedeshusen and Immetshusen eventually became Imbshausen. During the Middle Ages, the estate frequently changed owners.

Around 1561, Sievert von Steinberg became the owner. His successor, Adrian von Steinberg, had a new castle, a church, and a windmill built. Both are buried in the church in front of the altar. Friedrich von Steinberg had a new church built from 1722 to 1726 and founded the church library. In 1750, the old school was built. In 1777, the estate passed from the Steinbergs to the Barons von Kipe, descendants of Justus Kipius. Through Wilhelmine, who married a Baron von Stralenheim, the property passed to this family. From 1832, Imbshausen judicially belonged to the Amt Westerhof.

From 1862 to 1864, the current castle was built, designed by Julius Rasch, presumably as the first picturesque castle in the asymmetrical style of the Hanoverian School of Architecture, on the foundations of the previous one. In 1919, Baron Henning von Stralenheim took over the estate. Since his death, the estate has been managed by Carl-Christian von Plate Freiherr von Stralenheim. From 1952 to 1998, the castle was used by the Hanoverian Regional Church, which received it as a gift in 1964 after initially renting it, as a seminary for pastors. In 1998, the castle and park were sold for the symbolic sum of five Deutschmarks to the missionary organization Campus for Christ. From November 2010, the association Christian Encounter Center Schloss Imbshausen operated the facility. On November 1, 2012, the encounter center was closed. In 2013, the castle returned to its original owner, von Plate-Stralenheim.
