Innersee Castle

The origins of Innersee date back to 1286, when Hans Innerseer, a vassal of Starhemberg Castle, was first mentioned. Innersee Castle itself was first documented in 1301. The Innerseer family owned the original moated castle until 1595, when Hans Paul Innerseer had to sell it due to financial difficulties. After brief changes of ownership, Bartholomäus Freiherr von Dietrichstein acquired the property in 1579 and had it converted into a castle. During the Peasants' Wars in 1626, the castle was captured and set on fire by rebellious peasants. Christoph von Kher bought the burnt-out site and had the castle rebuilt. An engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674 shows a single-story building with a central tower. In 1635, the restored castle came into the possession of the Fieger family, before passing to the Willinger family in 1679 through marriage, who united Innersee with the Hinterndobl lordship. The castle changed hands several times, including the Gabelkoven family and Ernst Ignaz Gemberly Ritter von Weidenthal, who was ennobled by Empress Maria Theresia for his services to agriculture.
