Jægerspris Castle

The castle's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the estate, then known as Abrahamstrup, was owned by the Danish Crown and King Erik Menved resided there. The northern central section of the current castle still contains structural elements from this early period. King Christian IV had the south wing built and added the seven-sided stair tower. Around 1677, the castle was briefly privately owned by the Master of the Royal Hunt, Vincent Hahn, who gave it its current name, Jægerspris. Prince Carl of Denmark extended the south wing and added the front gables. Under King Christian VI, the east wing was added in 1730 as a connecting structure. King Frederick V received the castle in 1743 for his marriage to Louise of Great Britain, after which the north wing was added under the direction of master builder Johann Adam Soherr, and the towers were fitted with iron spires. King Frederick VII acquired Jægerspris Castle from the Crown Estate in 1845 and gifted it to his mistress Louise Rasmussen, making it her private residence and later her widow's seat. Countess Danner opened parts of the castle to the public in 1866 and, in her will in 1867, stipulated the establishment of a charitable foundation.

Jægerspris Castle is situated in the town of Jægerspris, in the Frederikssund municipality within Denmark's Capital Region (Hovedstaden), at an elevation of approximately 18 m above sea level.

Visitors can explore Jægerspris Castle today, which functions as a museum. Notable areas include the audience hall, the royal study with the king's pipe collection, the tower room, the armory, and Countess Danner's cabinet, whose furnishings reflect her elegant taste from around 1850.
