Jarlsberg Castle is a historical estate in Tønsberg, Norway, which served as a noble residence and later as the ancestral home of a family.

History+

The origins of Jarlsberg Castle trace back to the royal estate of “Sem,” which was confiscated by the Danish king after the Reformation. In 1673, Peder Schumacher Griffenfeld, later Prime Minister of Denmark, received this estate as a county and renamed it “Griffenfeldgård.” Following his conviction in 1676, the property was confiscated and in 1683 sold by Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenløve to Field Marshal Gustav Wilhelm Count Wedel, who renamed it “Jarlsberg County.” His descendants remain the owners to this day.
