JeanJaquet Castle (Cressier)
Château JeanJaquet in Cressier, Canton Neuchâtel, is a historic estate perched on a prominent hill. Originally an ecclesiastical site, it has been transformed over the centuries and is now a private castle, representing an interesting blend of ancient history and Neo-Gothic architecture.
History+
The earliest traces at this site may date back to pre-Christian times, with the existence of a Roman establishment or a pagan temple being discussed. The first confirmed mention of the Church of St-Martin in Cressier dates from the 12th century. In 1180, Bishop Roger of Lausanne transferred the church to the Abbey of Fontaine-André. Pope Clement VI confirmed its affiliation with the monastery of Fontaine-André in 1351. In 1457, the Gothic Vallier Chapel was built south of the church. The site, later known as Crêt-de-la-Cure, was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded until its sale to Mr. Léo Jeanjaquet. Architect Léo Châtelain was responsible for the construction of a western tower as well as two other turrets and a Neo-Gothic arcade gallery, which gives the eastern part a monastery-like appearance.
