Jessen Castle

In 1216, the first documented evidence as Jezzant occurred. The area was at that time owned by the Counts of Brehna, who built a castle in Jessen at the end of the 12th century; when they died out, the territory fell to the Wittenberg Ascanians. In 1422, the Wittenberg Ascanians died out, and the Wettins were their successors.

After Swedish troops completely destroyed the complex in 1640, it was rebuilt and modified several times in the 18th and 19th centuries.

During the Wars of Liberation, Jessen was almost constantly occupied by French, Prussian, or Russian troops. In October 1813, the headquarters of Blücher, Yorck, and Tauentzien were located in Jessen Castle.

In 1862, the brothers Carl and Fritz Raschig acquired the castle and established a cloth factory there. Since 1990, the castle has belonged to the city of Jessen, which, after its renovation in 1999, uses the building as its town hall.
