In Aschaffenburg, Johannisburg Castle is a Renaissance building made of red sandstone. Originally built as the second residence of the Archbishops and Electors of Mainz, it continues to shape the cityscape and is considered Aschaffenburg's most significant landmark.

History+

On the site of the present castle, there was a medieval fortress that served as the second seat of government for the Archbishops of Mainz. In 1284, a chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist was consecrated there. The castle was expanded in the 14th century but was plundered and destroyed in the Margraves' War in 1552. Elector Johann Schweikhard von Kronberg commissioned the Strasbourg master builder Georg Ridinger in 1604 to construct a new castle.
