Jühnde Castle

The first documented mention of an estate in Jühnde dates back to 960 under Otto I. A castle at this site was first mentioned in 1290 and belonged to the von June family, who died out in 1463. Subsequently, ownership passed to the von Bovenden and von Adelebsen families. In the late 15th century, the complex developed into a robber baron's castle, which led to its conquest by the people of Göttingen in 1484. Reconstruction began in 1489, during which the 29-meter-high castle tower, also known as Moshus, with its cross-rib vaulted lower floors, was built. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed by fire. In 1664, Imperial Baron Otto Grote zu Schauen took over the estate and had the castle rebuilt between 1668 and 1671.
