Kaarz Castle

The Kaarz estate was founded in the 17th century and remained in the possession of the von Bülow family until 1869. Subsequently, the Hamburg merchant Julius Hüniken acquired the property and had the current manor house and park built. His successor, Julius Hüniken the Younger, carried out further alterations to the castle and transformed the park into an English landscape park. During World War II, the castle offered family members protection from bombing raids. After its occupation by the Red Army in April 1945, the building was initially used as a reception camp for refugees from the eastern territories.
