Kahlsperg Castle

Kahlsperg Castle is located in the municipality of Oberalm in the Tennengau region. The manor "Kalasperg" once served to supervise the loading and shipping of salt.

The name "Schloss Kahlsperg" as it is known today derives from the noble family "Chalasperger-Chalhochsperger-Kalchsberger", who appear in Salzburg documents from 1250 until the 15th century.

After that, the estate changed hands several times until the castle was acquired in 1952 by the Congregation of the School Sisters of Hallein Salzburg from Count Walterskirchen (former Imperial Legation Councillor) and found its purpose and destiny as a senior residence.

The property was handed over to the School Sisters under gift-like conditions, but Walterskirchen attached the condition that the property had to be used for a social purpose. Walterskirchen and his wife then lived in extremely modest circumstances in Bad Ischl, where they also died.

In place of today's Kahlsperg Senior Pension, there used to be a large farmhouse, which was demolished in the 1960s in favor of the new retirement home. Nowadays, the demolition of a typical Tennengau farmhouse would not be so easily carried out due to monument protection reasons.

Kahlsperg Castle is located in the middle of the Salzach Valley. The castle itself cannot be visited.
