Kainberg Castle, a structure with roots in the early 13th century, is on a steep hill north of Kumberg in Styria, Austria. It was transformed into a Renaissance castle in the late 16th century and has been owned by the Wimpffen family since 1841.

History+

The origins of the estate date back to the early 13th century, when a fortified structure was built on the current site. This was the property of a ministerial family subordinate to Seckau Abbey. In 1218, Otto von Chunperch is mentioned as an inhabitant of the fortified court. For over 300 years, the estate remained in the possession of the Kainberg family before passing to Gilg von Saurau in 1547. After a brief ownership by Melchior Huber in 1570, Otto VI von Ratmannsdorf acquired the court. He had it converted and expanded into a Renaissance castle between 1570 and 1575.
