Kaiserau Castle

Kaiserau Castle is an Alpine castle and accommodation facility of the Benedictine Admont Abbey on the Kaiserau high plateau in the cadastral community of Krumau, within the market town of Admont.

The elongated two-story Kaiserau Castle features six apartments and a self-contained wing for group accommodation.

As early as 1160, an agricultural property named Chaiserowe, used for dairy production, was documented in Kaiserau. In 1551, Abbot Valentin Abel acquired the estate for Admont Abbey through an exchange, and it was subsequently operated as a monastic farm. Abbot Anselm Lürzer von Zechenthal had the farm converted into a hunting lodge with appropriate comfort during his time as abbot from 1707 to 1718. In 1778, Abbot Matthäus Offner had the hunting lodge enlarged and given more magnificent accents through a renovation. During the expropriation by National Socialism in World War II, the castle served as the Reich Research Institute for Alpine Agriculture, where it was almost completely destroyed by a major fire on September 3, 1942. In 1950, the former hunting lodge was rebuilt in a simpler and more modest form.
