Kalbsrieth Castle

The Lords of Kalb are a noble family traceable in the village since the 15th century. Their moated castle, once located in the northeastern part of the village, was destroyed by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War and replaced around 1690 by a representative palace where Goethe was a guest several times with Charlotte von Kalb.

Kalb Palace with its remarkable landscape park was acquired by the Wolzogen family in 1821, after the previous owners had to sell this property due to impending financial ruin. The palace was then redesigned in the Neoclassical style of the Goethe era and furnished with a collection of artworks. After the war, the palace was made available as housing for displaced persons, during which the valuable furnishings, doors, windows, stoves, and stucco work, characteristic of the valuable Neoclassical interior architecture, were lost. A support association has been working since the fall of the Berlin Wall to preserve the park and building components.
