Kalbsrieth Castle

The origins of the estate date back to the 15th century, when the von Kalb family owned a moated castle here. This complex was destroyed by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War. Around 1690, it was rebuilt as a castle, which later hosted guests such as Goethe, who stayed here with Charlotte von Kalb. In 1821, the castle changed hands, passing to the Wolzogen family after the previous owners had to sell it due to financial difficulties. Under the new owners, the castle underwent a transformation in the Neoclassical style of the Goethe era and was enriched with an art collection.
