Kalkhorst Castle

The history of Kalkhorst dates back to 1304 when the estate was owned by the Knights of Both. After a temporary sale to the St. John's Monastery in Lübeck, the Boths only managed to reacquire the property in 1563. It remained in family possession until 1849 before passing to the von Biel family. Under Thomson von Biel, the foundation stone for the current castle was laid in 1853, with architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase and garden inspector Christian Schaumburg providing advice. Construction, carried out by architect Schweiger, was interrupted in 1859 due to financial difficulties and only resumed in 1866 with the interior decoration. After the completion of the castle balcony in 1874 and the addition of interior furnishings in 1876, the estate was placed under forced administration in 1930 after the death of the last noble owner, Röttger von Biel, and auctioned off in 1931.
