Kalling Castle
In the High Middle Ages, the place, whose name derives from the personal name Chadalhoh, is first mentioned. In the 15th/16th century, the place, where a simple noble seat can already be assumed, belonged to the noble family Starringer zu Hofstarring. Around 1540, the early Renaissance predecessor building of the current castle must have been erected. Thereafter, the place and seat passed to the Barons Goder and subsequently by inheritance to the Barons Eckher zu Kapfing. They had the noble seat rebuilt as a Baroque castle around 1720. Since the builder was a nephew of the Prince-Bishop of Freising, Johann Franz von Eckher, the building also served as a summer residence for the Prince-Bishops when they were in the area. In 1793, the castle passed to the Counts of Holnstein from Erding. Thereafter, there was a frequent change of ownership, and the castle increasingly fell into disrepair. In the mid-20th century, it served as a retirement home for the Helferring deutscher Frauen. In 1987, the roofs of the chapel and castle were re-covered, and in 1990, all doors were renovated and the fittings refurbished. In 1994, the main portal was renovated, and the exterior facade was completed in 1995. For some time now, it has been for sale again.
Castle Description+
The almost square building, approximately 20x23m in size with three stories, has a double mansard roof. In the northeast, a tall round chapel (approx. 12m inner diameter) with a conical roof is attached. Inside, there is a small hall in the ground floor's southwest corner and large corner living rooms on the upper floors. In a long and wide corridor (with access to the chapel's gallery) are the artistically significant library cabinets from the time the castle was built. Furthermore, the interior features a magnificent staircase, ceilings with stucco decoration in the rooms, and late Baroque doors with wood carvings.
In the castle chapel "Zu unserer Lieben Frau" (To Our Lady), an altar in the late Baroque/early Rococo transitional style and a large crucifixion group in the same style are worth seeing.
In front of the southeast corner of the building, the Baroque garden has been restored, and the remaining plot (with hedges) has been appropriately designed. West of the castle is the former farmstead of the complex.
