Kalmar Castle, located in the Swedish city of the same name, is considered one of Northern Europe's best-preserved Renaissance castles. Its strategically important position on the former border with Denmark significantly shaped Swedish history. The imposing structure stands on a small peninsula on the Baltic Sea coast and is separated from the mainland by a moat.
History+
The castle's origins date back to 1180, when a defensive tower was built under King Knut Eriksson to protect the city from maritime threats. In the late 13th century, Magnus Ladulås had a curtain wall with four towers erected around this original tower. Kalmar Castle was the first refuge for Gustav Vasa after his escape from Danish captivity, which is why a well and a monument inside the castle commemorate him. Gustav Vasa and his sons significantly expanded the complex; Gustav added a stone and earth rampart to defend against emerging artillery. His sons Erik XIV and John III focused on the artistic design, commissioning foreign architects and artists. Towards the end of the 17th century, a long period of decline began, during which the fortress, which withstood 22 sieges but was never stormed, served as a prison, granary, and distillery. Many furnishings were destroyed, and there were even plans for demolition. Renovation work began in the 1850s and continues to this day.
