Kalsdorf Castle

A first defensive structure was probably erected at this site around the middle of the 12th century. By 1160, a tower already stood here, possibly built by Karl von Hohenberg, a ministerialis of the Wildoners.

In the 13th century, Kalsdorf came into the feudal possession of the Hagers. However, the tower was probably no longer present at that time, as the Hagers already resided in a fortified farmstead. In 1366, this was a princely fief in the possession of Hans des Hagers and was then called Challens torf. Soon after, it passed to the Pessnitzers, who were related to the Hagers. Ulrich der Pessnitzer sold it in 1419 to Niklas Herberstorfer. He had the farmstead converted into a more comfortable and representative residence.

In 1548, Franz von Herberstorf had the farmstead expanded into a stately defensive complex to counter the increasingly threatening Turkish danger. During the Hungarian invasion of 1605, the well-fortified castle could not be captured. In 1630, Franz Freiherr von Herberstorf, as a Protestant, had to leave Styria. He sold his property to Barbara Constancia Freiin von Khuenburg, who was married in her second marriage to a Count Wildenstein. Under Johann Franz Freiherr von Wildenstein, the lordship went bankrupt in 1839. It was acquired the following year by Johann Michael Zach. Already in 1843, Ignaz Oblak is named as the new owner, followed by Josef Ritter von Uhlheim in 1866.

Kalsdorf then passed to Anton Czeika, whose descendants owned the estate until the second half of the 20th century. In 1945, the east and south wings were largely destroyed by arson. A first restoration took place in 1947, but the east wing remained uninhabited. Today, the castle does not make a very well-maintained impression from the outside. However, work is being done on its restoration. The inner courtyard has already been restored. Several apartments have been set up in the castle.
