History+

The origins of Kaltenberg Castle date back to 1292, when it was built by Duke Rudolph. As early as 1320, it was destroyed in a family feud. After a reconstruction around 1425 by the Augsburg patrician Peter Rehlinger, it changed hands several times, including to the Hundt zu Lautterbach family. In 1514, the Bavarian historian Wiguläus Hundt was born here. In 1612, the Landsberg Jesuits took over the castle, but just two decades later, in 1633, it fell victim to the destruction of the Thirty Years' War by the Swedes. Later, in 1781, it served as a commandery of the Order of Malta. Around 1900, the painter Lorenzo Quaglio acquired the estate.
