Kaltenstein Castle, a landmark of Vaihingen an der Enz, stands above the city. Originally a castle, it transformed into a palace and fulfilled various functions, from residence to social institution.

History+

The first mention of the structure occurred in 1096 as “castrum vehingen”. Initially, it was the ancestral seat of a Vaihingen noble family until 1175. Afterwards, it passed into the possession of the Counts of Calw-Löwenstein and later the Counts of the city of Vaihingen, before being acquired by the Counts of Württemberg in 1339. From then on, an appointed chief bailiff resided at the castle. In the 16th and 18th centuries, Kaltenstein underwent renovations that also strengthened its defensive capabilities. Until the end of the 18th century, it served as a military base, hospital, and later from 1843 as a workhouse.
