Kannawurf Castle

The origins of the site date back to 1221, when the ministerial family of Kannewurf had their ancestral seat here. The moated castle served to control and protect a trade route leading from Erfurt to Magdeburg. In 1564, Georg II. Vitzthum von Eckstedt had the current Renaissance castle built, with inscriptions on doors and windows confirming the construction period between 1563 and 1565. A tower bell from 1586, adorned with the family crest, is still preserved today. After Georg's death in 1570, the castle passed to his five sons. In the 17th century, marked by the effects of the Thirty Years' War, the estate was leased and later acquired by the von Bose family. They undertook alterations to the room layout and roofs in the 18th century. After further changes of ownership, the Princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen acquired the property in 1839.
