Karlberg Castle

To be privately owned

In Solna, Sweden, Karlberg Palace is situated on the Karlberg Canal. Originally a freehold, it today houses the world's oldest cadet school.

History+

Karlberg's origins trace back to the 1620s when Grand Admiral Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm, a half-brother of Gustav II Adolf, acquired three villages in the Solna parish and formed the Karlberg freehold. A stone house built in 1634 formed the core of the later palace complex. After Gyllenhielm's death in 1650, the estate lay vacant until it was acquired in 1669 by Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie. He transformed Karlberg into a palace and redesigned its interior. Financial difficulties forced de la Gardie to sell it to Johan Gabriel Stenbock, but by 1688, the palace passed into royal ownership.
