In the Durlach district of Karlsruhe lies Karlsburg Castle, a former residence of the Margraves of Baden. Originally a medieval lowland castle, it was expanded into a palace and served as a seat of power.

History+

The history of Karlsburg Castle began in 1563 when Margrave Karl II decided to move his residence from Pforzheim to Durlach. He had the existing medieval lowland castle converted into a palace. Subsequent margraves expanded the complex until it was burned down by French troops in 1689. Reconstruction began in 1698 under Margrave Friedrich Magnus, who had returned from exile. The plans met with resistance from the citizens of Durlach, and work was halted in 1703 after only two wings were completed.
