Karlshof Castle (Zug)
Karlshof Castle in Zug, once known as Bruggbachhof, is a historic estate distinguished by its picturesque lakeside location and its long history as a country residence and later as a monastery. It stands as a remarkable example of the evolution of rural manor houses in the region.
History+
Around 1616, a chapel dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo was built on the grounds of what was then the Bruggbachhof. In 1643, St. Karl Hof was constructed as a summer residence for the wealthy Weissenbach family of mint masters from the Zug Mint, in the style of Zurich country estates. The property and chapel remained in the family's possession until 1732. In 1744, Ammann Joh. Caspar Lutiger acquired the hof, and in 1750 he extensively renovated the manor house. The building is a broad rectangle with three stories and a mansard roof. In 1840, Peter Jos. Zwyssig took over the hof, where P. Alberich Zwyssig composed the famous "Swiss Psalm" in 1841. Since 1898, St. Karl has been managed by the Menzingen Sisters of "Salesanium."
