Karlstein Castle

The first documented mention of Karlstein as “Chadelstain” dates back to 1112. As a feudal castle, it frequently changed hands among various noble families but always remained subject to the respective sovereign. From 1576, under the Lords of Puchheim, it briefly became a center of the Reformation. Due to the changing ownership, the complex was rebuilt and expanded, so few traces of the original castle remain. The existing castle chapel dates back to the 16th century. The castle served not only as a noble residence but also as a watch factory from 1880 and at times even as a prison. The peasant leader Georg Schrembser is said to have been imprisoned here from 1597 until his execution.
