In the Karlstein district of the market town of Regenstauf in Bavaria, Karlstein Castle rises, a neo-Gothic structure. It is known for its four-winged complex and the integrated St. Ulrich Castle Chapel.

History+

The origins of Karlstein Castle date back to 1393, when the Lords of Leuchtenberg initiated its construction. The castle saw several changes of ownership. A significant event was its plundering in 1632 by the Swedish General Craz during the Thirty Years' War. Since 1808, the estate has been owned by the Counts of Drechsel-Deufstetten. After 1900, extensive renovations and an expansion took place, giving the castle its current neo-Gothic appearance. A personality who grew up here was Max Ulrich Graf von Drechsel, a resistance fighter against the Nazi regime.
