Karow Castle

Karow Castle is located in Karow, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, directly on Federal Highway 192 between Goldberg and Malchow.

The original building was constructed in the early 19th century in the Neoclassical style by the noble family von Hahn. In 1899, the Berlin merchant Johannes Schlutius, who already owned an estate in Alt Schwerin, purchased the Karow estate along with the building. He had it expanded between 1903 and 1906 with an addition in the Neo-Baroque style. The designs were provided by the Berlin architect and court architect to Kaiser Wilhelm II, Ernst von Ihne.

During World War II, Rostock high school students were housed in the building to protect them from bombing raids. Towards the end of the war, refugees moved in. In the course of the land reform in 1945, the land and all properties of the Schlutius estate family were expropriated without compensation.

Subsequently, the castle was used as a vocational school with an apprentice dormitory for the training of farmers. From 1998 to 2007, the new owners had the castle extensively restored.
