Kattenhorn Castle

Kattenhorn Castle is located in the hamlet of the same name, belonging to the municipality of Öhningen, on Lake Constance on the Höri peninsula. The fortified house Burg Kattenhorn is first mentioned in 1391.

Already on October 16, 1166, Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa) confirmed possessions to the Öhningen Abbey in Augsburg, including Cattenhorn. It is said to have been an imperial fief of the Hohenklingen family. The former moated castle was probably built around the middle of the 14th century. The first owner was Hermann Kremlich (Cremlich/Gremlich) from a knightly family originating from Pfullendorf. He is last mentioned in 1402.

Through inheritance from the last of Hohenklingen, it passed to the Counts of Fürstenberg.

The castle passed through many inhabitants back to Fürstenberg, who sold it on March 12, 1867, to the Schaffhausen Junker Johann Heinrich Im Thurn.

Im Thurn completely rebuilt the former moated castle and had the tower and moats removed. He intended to farm, but this was not very successful. He had the garden redesigned. After his death, his widow sold the castle to the retired artillery lieutenant Hammer von Colmar, who, after renovations, sold it to the doctor Vollbeding. After several further changes of ownership, it returned to private hands.
