Katzelsdorf Castle

The origins of the castle date back to the 12th century, with its first mention in 1183 by the minnesinger Ulrich von Liechtenstein. The castle acquired its current form in the 17th century under Wolf Mathias von Königsberg, who had it built as a moated castle with three corner bastions. In the 19th century, the estate experienced frequent changes of ownership; among the owners were Caroline Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister, and Marie Thérèse Charlotte de Bourbon, a daughter of Marie Antoinette. In 1928, Max von Freising acquired the castle and established a stud farm there. During World War II, it served as accommodation for soldiers and housed the largest horse hospital on the Eastern Front, which led to significant damage.
