Katzenberg Castle, an impressive historical complex, is situated on a Quaternary Inn terrace in Kirchdorf am Inn, in the district of Ried im Innkreis in Upper Austria. Originally built as a fortress, it was transformed over the centuries into a representative castle and baroque-style residence, combining its defensive origins with residential comfort.

History+

The first documented mention of the complex as Chotzenperig Castle dates back to 1196, when it was owned by the Bishops of Passau. In 1251, the fortress was enfeoffed to the Counts of Ortenburg, who had it administered by bailiffs. From 1300 to 1525, the Mautner family from Burghausen held the fief, followed by the Schwarzensteiners. After the death of Hans Wolf Schwarzensteiner in 1595, the property passed to his son-in-law, Count Burkhard von Taufkirchen. Under his descendants, the castle was transformed into a palace and underwent Baroque renovation in the 17th century. A fire in 1629 caused severe damage. During the Bavarian Peasants' Uprising of 1705, Katzenberg was captured by farmers.
