Kaulsdorf Castle

Kaulsdorf Castle is located in the eponymous town in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia.

The building resembles a residential tower-like block on a T-shaped floor plan with a semi-circular tower on the short side. Parts of the building are timber-framed. Traces of a moat are still visible, over which a drawbridge once led. It was probably a fortified manor house of the nobility.

The village of Chulisdorf was a donation from Archbishop Anno of Cologne to Saalfeld Abbey in 1074. Later, the village and the noble seat came into the possession of the Counts of Orlamünde. In 1346, they gave the village on the Saale to the Burgraves of Kirchberg. In 1426, the Elector of Saxony acquired the complex and the village. In 1677, the old castle was expanded into a palace. A Mr. Dobeneck is also mentioned, who owned the castle with a small knight's estate. His coat of arms hangs in the church. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists. Today, the municipality uses the property.
