Kellenberg Castle, a historic moated castle, is situated on the northern edge of the village of Barmen, a district of Jülich.

History+

The origins of Kellenberg Castle lie with the Lords of Barnim, followed by the Scheiffardt von Merode family, under whose aegis the current form of the complex was shaped in the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1626, ownership transferred to Johann Karl von Utenhove for 4,762 Reichstaler. Later, in 1638, Jan van Werth, an imperial general during the Thirty Years' War, acquired the castle for his daughter Lambertine Irmgardis. Through her marriage to Winand Hieronymus Reichsfreiherr Raitz von Frentz, Kellenberg came into the possession of this family.
