Kirchberg Castle

In 1153, the place was first mentioned in a document when Ulrich von Pernegg donated the church of "Chirchperg" with corresponding tithe income to Geras Abbey.

In 1431, an Austrian army succeeded in decisively defeating the Hussites in the area of Kirchberg. The feudal sovereignty over the dominion was probably held by the Lords of Kuenring-Seefeld at that time. Georg von Kuenring-Seefeld is mentioned in 1450. In 1492, Valentin Gundisch von Kirchberg appears as a vassal. Otherwise, there is little news about the small estate until the end of the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, Adam Galler (1541) and Wenzel von Krackwitz (1552) are mentioned as owners. The latter had the old fortified building extensively converted into a fortified Renaissance castle.

In 1571, Kirchberg was a fief of the Nikolsburg line of the Lords of Liechtenstein, which was granted to Balthasar Winkler. In 1605, it belonged to Johann Ludwig von Krackwitz, who was outlawed in 1620. His castle had already been plundered a year earlier by imperial Cossacks. It was confiscated and sold in 1627 to Ferdinand Kulmer von Rosenbühel. In 1641, Joachim Enzmillner, Imperial Count of and zu Windhaag, acquired it, but he gave it up again in 1653. A multiple change of ownership followed.

It was not until 1720, when Johann Christoph Ferdinand Graf Mallenthein bought Kirchberg and united it with his lordships of Groß-Siegharts and Blumau, that peace returned. Around 1730, the complex underwent a Baroque transformation. In 1895, a fire caused severe damage. Afterwards, the estate was leased. Today it belongs to the Frühwirth family.
