Kirchberg Castle

The castle was first mentioned in 1288 as property of Kempten Abbey. In 1502, the chapel was built under Abbot Johannes II. Scharpfer of Salem. At the beginning of the 17th century, the outbuildings were constructed. In 1741, renovations and extensions took place. Until the secularization in 1802, the castle was owned by Salem Abbey. In 1802, the property passed to the Grand Dukes of Baden. In 1829, the baroque castle chapel was demolished. Between 1850 and 1880, profound transformations of the castle buildings took place. During the Second World War, the castle was used by the Dornier company. In 1945, the castle was briefly used as a prison and subsequently as a branch of the Salem Castle School. From 1958 to 1995, it was again used by Dornier. In 1995, the castle was sold by the Dukes of Baden. Today, the castle houses condominiums.
