Kirchberg Castle

The first documented mention of Kirchberg dates back to 1233. In 1344, the ownership of Walkenried Monastery in the vicinity of the site is recorded. Duke Otto II enfeoffed the Lords of Oldershausen and the Lords of Freden with Kirchberg in 1438. Through the families of Uslar-Gleichen and Duke Heinrich I, the manor eventually passed to Heinrich II. In the 16th century, the castle served as a residence for the illegitimate children Eva von Trott had with Heinrich II. As these sons had no descendants, the estate reverted to the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in 1597.
