Kirchheim Castle

Kirchheim Castle, a Renaissance castle, is situated on the edge of Kirchheim unter Teck's old town. It is one of the best-preserved examples of the former state fortresses of the Duchy of Württemberg and served as a defensive structure, ducal residence, and widow's seat.
History+
Duke Ulrich of Württemberg began construction of the castle in 1538 as part of a comprehensive expansion of state fortresses, aiming to better protect his territory after his return from exile. Conceived as a corner bastion of the city wall, the functional building, featuring two half-timbered floors above a solid base, was completed in 1556 under Duke Christoph. Initially, it served for defense and occasionally as a hunting lodge. In 1594, Duke Friedrich I moved his court here to escape the plague in Stuttgart.
