The origin of the castle lies in an old fortress, which was built in the 13th century. Around 1500, the castle was built on the walls of the old fortress. In 1570, Lazarus von Schwendi expanded the castle. In 1633, the castle was destroyed by Swedish troops in the Thirty Years' War and subsequently rebuilt. In 1740-41, the castle was rebuilt. In 1847-48, it was converted into a school.
