Guttenberg's Water Castle, also known as Kirchlauter Castle, is a Baroque ensemble that forms the center of the village of the same name in the Haßberge district of Lower Franconia. The complex is still inhabited today.

History+

The origins of the estate date back to 1511, when Moritz von Guttenberg received Kirchlauter as a fief from the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg. In the 16th century, the Lords of Guttenberg erected the so-called Old Castle, located southwest of the later main complex, which now serves as the administrator's house. Construction of the current moated castle began in 1689 under the Würzburg Prince-Bishop Johann Gottfried von Guttenberg and was partially redesigned in the 18th century. The Barons of Guttenberg inhabited the castle until 1968.
