Kirchschönbach Castle

The Barons of Guttenberg built the castle in the 15th century. The castle was destroyed in 1525 during the German Peasants' War. In 1698, the castle was rebuilt by the Würzburg master builder and architect Joseph Greising. After this, the owners changed. Among them were the Barons of Erthal towards the end of the 18th century. From 1803-26, the castle was used as an Electoral Forester's House. Afterwards, Sebastian Schlimbach bought the castle at auction in 1823. In 1850, the wine merchant Lurz from Rödelsee bought the castle. Count Friedrich Karl von Schönborn bought it in 1874. In 1923, the castle came into the possession of the Oberzell Franciscans through a donation from Countess Julie von Schönborn.
