Kirchstetten Castle

The core structure of the castle originated in the 16th century as a four-winged complex, once surrounded by a moat and fortifications. In 1723, Matthias von Suttner, an imperial physician, acquired the estate. He commissioned Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach for the Baroque renovation, which gave the castle its current U-shaped form. The Fest-Maulbertsch-Saal is named after Franz Anton Maulbertsch, who created his early work “The Triumph of Truth over Time” here between 1750 and 1752. The hall is complemented by Rococo portraits of the Suttner family by Franz Anton Palko. In the early 20th century, Bertha von Suttner visited her relatives at the castle multiple times.
