Kirnberg Castle is first mentioned in 1121/28 as being owned by Maganus de Chumperch. Ownership then passed to the Lords of Kirnberg. In 1338, the castle is documented as being owned by the Lords of Plankenstein. Until 1613, the castle was owned by the Lords of Zinzendorf.
