Kittendorf Castle

The history of the estate dates back to the 16th century when a predecessor building existed. After 1751, a two-story half-timbered house was built on the same site. The current castle was constructed between 1848 and 1853 on behalf of Hans Friedrich von Oertzen, a chamberlain to the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg. Architect Friedrich Hitzig designed the building as a replica of Babelsberg Palace in the Tudor Gothic style. In 1875, an additional residential wing was added. During World War II, the castle lost its copper roof, which was replaced with tar paper. After the war, the von Oertzen family was dispossessed, and during the GDR era, the building served as a boarding school and agricultural vocational school, but it increasingly fell into disrepair.
