The small noble residence was built around 1560 by Hans Goldschan as a moated castle. Later owners included the Perner and Grueber families, as well as Balthasar von Klaffenau.

When the Haiducks devastated Eastern Styria in 1605, Klaffenau was also burned down. Two years later, its then owner, Balthasar Wilhelm zu Klaffenau, sold it to Vorau Abbey.
