The castle was built in the Middle Ages. In 1510, Laurentius Reiß von Lilienfeld, abbot of Lilienfeld Abbey, acquired the Klafterbrunn estate and developed it as a summer residence for the Lords of Lilienfeld. The castle received its current form during the Empire period.
