Kleßheim Castle

The origins of the estate date back to a noble residence called Kleshof, which Prince-Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf Thun acquired in 1690. Around 1700, under his patronage, construction of the pleasure palace Favorita began according to designs by Fischer von Erlach. After Thun's death in 1709, work initially ceased until Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian completed the palace, albeit with some plan changes. In 1866, Klessheim became the property of Archduke Ludwig Viktor, who had the winter palace, the Kavalierhaus, built by Heinrich von Ferstel. Between 1925 and 1935, the palace housed the Elizabeth Duncan School. From 1938, Adolf Hitler used the estate for state receptions. After World War II, in 1945, it served as a venue for Allied victory celebrations and later as the seat of the American military administration. Today, it is owned by the State of Salzburg.

Klessheim Palace is situated at an elevation of approximately 421 meters above sea level in Salzburg, in the Salzburg Umgebung district, in the federal state of Salzburg, Austria.

Today, Klessheim Palace houses a casino, which has been located here since 1993. The entire complex, including the palace park, is a protected monument and part of a landscape protection area.
